In spring 2021 Austrotherm, the leading Central European supplier of climate-friendly thermal insulation, launched a free, climate-neutral recycling service for XPS offcuts from building sites. From among numerous participants, SANOOX GmbH from Pöllau and Neumayer Bau Ges.m.b.H. from Purbach were honoured for the largest and the cleanest quantity of recyclable XPS in 2021. As a thank-you, the Recycling Heroes received 30 m³ of new XPS, the same quantity as the insulation they had collected.

In 2021, with our Austria-wide XPS recycling service, we were the first company to make a climate-neutral start into a sustainable circular economy. With the largest quantity of recyclable XPS offcuts, SANOOX has proven to us that recycling works and also pays off. Many thanks to all our customers who have been actively helping from the start to ensure that XPS offcuts, which used to be thrown away, can be turned into new energy-saving XPS.

Innovative plumbing technology from Pöllau

At SANOOX we specialise in making plumbing and radiator boxes for drywall and masonry construction. “Austrotherm XPS plays a central role for us,” says managing director Ing. Bernhard Schneidhofer. On site, the boxes are installed as finished modules with standardised connections, which makes it much easier to calculate installation costs. “Of course our XPS milling offcuts don’t end up in the bin; they are carefully and cleanly recycled,” Schneidhofer adds.

Austria-wide collection of clean XPS offcuts

Since March 2021 Austrotherm has been collecting and taking back XPS offcuts from building sites across Austria free of charge. Customers save disposal costs with little effort and conserve valuable resources. Austrotherm recycles clean offcuts from current Austrotherm XPS production that arise when boards are cut and fitted on site. At the Purbach plant they are crushed, ground and processed in the same way as offcuts from production. The granulate is turned back into high-quality, climate-friendly XPS insulation. This saves new raw material and avoids CO₂ emissions.
